Frequently asked questions
What is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme and how does the £7,500 grant work?
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a UK Government initiative offering a £7,500 grant to help homeowners replace gas boilers with low-carbon heating systems such as heat pumps. The grant is applied directly to the installation cost, significantly reducing the upfront investment required to make the switch. You can find out more information here: https://www.gov.uk/apply-boiler-upgrade-scheme
Will switching to a heat pump reduce my energy bills?
A heat pump can reduce carbon emissions and is more energy efficient than a gas boiler, but bill savings are not guaranteed. Although a well-installed heat pump is four times more efficient than a gas boiler, since electricity is over 4 times more expensive than gas, homeowners who replace gas boilers with heat pumps often see little or no savings in their energy bills. In order to see bill savings, heat pumps need to be installed with other technologies such as solar PV or batteries.
Will the Cosy heat pump tariff reduce my energy bills with a heat pump?
The Cosy tariff gives two 3-hour periods of cheap electricity. Scheduling your heat pump to heat the home in these periods will reduce the energy bills, but a predicted £200-300 per year according to Octopus Energy. However, the day rate of the Cosy tariff is slightly higher than the standard day rate, and the peak rate between 4 PM and 7 PM is 50% higher than the day rate. As a result, the cost of washing, cooking, watching TV, etc., is higher, and as a result, the total energy bill will be the same as using a standard tariff, so be wary of using these tariffs.
How does the battery and off-peak charging work?
The PowrPlan battery charges automatically during off-peak hours when electricity can cost as little as ~7p/kWh. This stored energy is then used to power your home and heat pump during peak periods, reducing exposure to higher electricity prices and helping lower overall running costs.
What are the upfront costs and how does the monthly subscription work?
The heat pump system is typically installed with support from the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, which reduces upfront costs significantly. The PowrPlan battery is available via a simple monthly subscription model, removing the need for additional upfront investment while still unlocking off-peak energy savings.
Can I qualify for the Wondrwall Battery PowrPlan with no upfront cost?
Eligibility for PowrPlan depends on your property type, installation suitability, and system configuration. Most homes compatible with a heat pump installation can also qualify for the battery subscription, subject to a technical assessment to ensure optimal performance and energy savings.
How does the Wondrwall heat pump and battery reduce my energy bills?
The Wondrwall heat pump and battery work together to use offpeak electricity to reduce your energy bills and maximise the effectiveness of the battery. Firstly the Wondrwall system shifts as much heating and hot water energy consumption to offpeak times to reduce the load on the battery. The battery is then used to cover the small amount of demand during the rest of the day to maintain the heating within the home.
Can I also install solar PV?
Yes, the Wondrwall battery includes connections for solar PV and the app is designed to work with solar generation to reduce your energy bills. Including solar PV will reduce your energy bills further but not all properties are suitable for installation. Let us know when you register for the Wondrwall heat pump and battery PowrPlan and we will assess your property to see whether solar PV feasible.
Can I get solar PV included at no upfront cost with the battery?
Solar PV can be included but is not covered by the Battery PowrPlan subscription. Wondrwall’s full PowrPlan offer does combine solar PV but this is currently limited to new build homes only.
Can I install an EV charger?
Yes. Wondrwall offers an EV charger that integrates with the rest of the Wondrwall platform. Let us know when you register and we will ake sure we assess your property for suitability and provide an offer to install. Typically installing at the same time will be cheaper than doing the work separately.
Will my current EV tariff work with the Wondrwall heat pump and battery?
Yes. The Wondrwall system is designed to work with all Time-Of-Use tariffs to reduce energy bills. Wondrwall can assess a recommend whether your current tariff is the best one for you.
I already have a heat pump, can I still take up this offer?
Yes. In this case please look at our Battery PowrPlan offer https://wondrwall.com/battery-powrplan/. However, while it will work and reduce your energy bills, non Wondrwall heat pumps lack some of the integration and functionality of the Wondrwall heat pump with the Wondrwall battery and hence savings will not be as high.
Can I use a heat pump from a different manufacturer instead of the Wondrwall heat pump?
Potentially the total cost to install a non Wondrwall heat pump will be higher but please check with your installer.
