Battery PowrPlan – New battery subscription set to cut homeowner energy bills

For a subscription fee of £35 a month, households could reduce annual electricity costs by £984 per year – without cutting usage – using an innovative UK-developed energy system designed to store cheap electricity and avoid peak prices. 1

The launch comes with average household energy bills (gas and electricity combined) still sitting at around £1,700–£1,850 a year, and electricity prices remaining stubbornly high compared with pre-2021 levels, leaving many consumers feeling they have exhausted traditional cost-cutting options.

Recent government research shows energy bills and tariffs remain one of the biggest concerns for UK households, particularly during winter, with many worried about price volatility and uncertain future costs.

Under the current price cap, households typically pay between 28p and 32p per kilowatt-hour for electricity, before standing charges are added. While switching suppliers or tariffs can offer small savings, many households report frustration at the limited impact this has on overall bills.

People have switched tariffs, cut back where they can, and still face four-figure electricity costs. That’s why attention is shifting from who supplies energy, to when energy is bought and used.  Batteries are the obvious solution but can often be expensive. We are really pleased that we are able to offer them to homeowners at a low price with no up front costs whatsoever, massively reducing the barriers faced in the market until now.

Battery PowrPlan combines AI energy management with a 12.8kWh home battery, professionally installed for free, to store electricity overnight when prices are lowest. It then powers the home with that low-cost power during the day when electricity from the grid is most expensive.

On some off-peak tariffs, overnight electricity can cost as little as 6.5p per kWh, compared with peak rates of between 28p and 32p per kWh.

How Battery PowrPlan savings work

A household using 10kWh of electricity per day on EON’s Next Drive tariff would pay just £237.25 per year for the electricity to run their home with Battery PowrPlan, instead of £1,011 (January 2026 price cap) on a standard tariff.

Any unused stored energy can also be exported back to the grid, earning additional credit and reducing costs further – if 1.5 kWh is given back each day at 16.5p / kWh, the homeowner earns back £90.34 per year.

So the actual electricity bill is £146.91.

The Battery PowrPlan subscription is £420 per year (£385 if paid annually), so in total, they pay £566.91 instead of £1,011.05 for electricity2.

To benefit fully from the savings potential, households need a smart electricity meter and a time-of-use tariff, which charges cheaper rates at certain times of day.

According to the Government3 around nine in ten UK adults report that they have heard of tariffs where prices vary by time of day, and roughly half say they would be likely to switch if available.

Research shows that, as of March 2025, approximately two-thirds of UK4 households had a smart or advanced meter installed, a key enabler for variable tariffs and off-peak pricing.

Despite increasing smart meter coverage, only around 2.3 per cent of UK households are currently on modern time-of-use electricity tariffs that offer lower off-peak prices. Uncertainty about how they work is cited as the main barrier to the adoption of this important new way to buy energy.

Wondrwall is working to educate homeowners about the benefits of these tariffs and help optimise their usage with Battery PowrPlan.

This is about protecting households from volatility. If homeowners can lock in savings of several hundred pounds a year without changing how they live, that’s meaningful at a time when energy costs remain a major source of stress. It’s surprising how few homeowners are making use of time-of-use tariffs when they have the capability via their smart meters. We believe that Battery PowrPlan will help lead a real change that will maximise the impact of the tariffs and save thousands on electricity bills over a ten year period.”
